You May Need
- Pallet
- Two 8-foot 1×2 boards
- Wood glue
- 1″ and 2″ brad nails
- Nail gun
- Tape measure
- Hammer
Procedure on How to Build a Wood Crate
1. Prepare the pallet.
First, disassemble the wood pallet. Then use a hammer to eliminate the remaining nails once all the boards are loose.
2. Cut the wood pallet to size.
For example, you will need eight 30″ long pieces of wood pallet and eight 15″ shorter pieces for this project. Furthermore, the longer pieces will be the sides, and the shorter pieces will be the ends.
3. Make the base of the crate.
You will need 1×2 boards to construct the base. To make a rectangle for the bottom of the crate, you will need two 29″ pieces and two 12 ⅛” pieces. Furthermore, using a nail gun and 2″ brad nails, fasten these together.
After that, you will need four 15 ½” pieces. Once again, use the nail gun and 2″ brad nails to fasten these. Then turn the frame over and secure two 13 ¼” boards to each end with the nail gain.
4. Attach the pallet boards to the crate’s side.
Turn the crate frame over to the side. Apply wood glue to the crate frame’s bottom and sides. Then you will begin to attach the long pallet boards to the side of the crate. This time, attach the boards with 1″ brad nails and nail gun.
Flip over and repeat the process with the longer boards on the opposite side.
Now, attach the shorter boards to the ends of the crate in the same way as the longer boards. Furthermore, for the bottom floor, you can trim boards to fit within. Then, using the nail gun and 1″ brad nails, secure the boards in place.
To finish building the crate, nail two 26″ long 1×2 boards along each side.
Optional Procedure
After finishing building the crate, you can make it a rustic look. Just sand the crate depending on how rustic you want it to look. Next, you may add a rope handle by drilling some holes. Tie the ends of the rope and fuse with a flame to prevent fraying.
Furthermore, you can also paint or stain your crate, or you may want to attach some caster swivel wheels.
